Comparative Analysis of the Microbiome across the Gut-Skin Axis in Atopic Dermatitis

A new article published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences discussed that atopic dermatitis (AD) is a refractory and relapsing skin disease with a complex and multifactorial etiology - involving both, congenital and environmental factors, along with  the hosts’ immune-mediated response.

Here, the authors described a gut microbiome-mediated connection between emotional disorders – for instance, depression and anxiety, and dermatologic conditions like acne, based on the comorbidities. Many aspects of this gut-brain-skin integration hypothesis have recently been revalidated to provide treatment options for AD. It was stated that comparative analysis of microbial clusters across the gut-skin axis can provide new information regarding AD research.
